visual markings we wear influence our self-perception. This work consists of medium- and large-scale hand-printed textiles inspired by Wiener Werkstätte's use of monograms as personal logos and the distinctiveness of handwriting and handwritten signatures. These prints navigate the space between abstraction and figuration, encouraging viewers to reflect on the prevalence and significance of personal branding in a world where social media increasingly expects us to promote and brand ourselves. Members of the Wiener Werkstätte employed monograms as logos that they hoped embodied the philosophy and essence of their work and, ultimately, themselves. They identified with these monograms, much like how we seek to make our selfies represent us nowadays. However, unlike monograms, selfies are plentiful, each capturing a different moment and version of ourselves—no single digital visual representation can capture our complete essence. A person's handwritten signature also represents the self, and considerable effort is often devoted to crafting the "perfect signature." Yet, handwriting is becoming less common, as younger generations increasingly struggle with reading or writing in cursive. This form of personal representation risks being lost forever. Each piece in this collection features silk-screen-printed geometric and organic shapes that form monogram letters. On the fabric's selvage, heat-pressed markings resemble handwriting exercises, suggesting continuity beyond the picture plane, similar to the ongoing patterns of printed fabric or the pages of a notebook filled with scribbles and doodles. I designed a font using the first half of the alphabet and my initials to create these works. This font combines geometric shapes with figurative forms resembling the human body. By layering each letter over another to form each monogram, new shapes emerge from the interplay of negative space and transparent color overlays. This process mimics linear writing, echoing traditional handwriting and calligraphy techniques. Additional elements referencing garment making, such as straps, hems, and finishes, blur the lines between whether these textiles are intended to be draped on a body or displayed on the wall. The medium textiles in this body of work demonstrate the creation process of these monograms, resembling the repetition found in writing exercises. The series Group Photos, part of the overarching body of work The Parties, was created from inherited linens given to me by my mother. These napkins served as witnesses to my family’s history, carrying the physical traces of a life lived. By rubbing these linens and arranging them as stand-ins to recreate poses from family photos, I map how an immigrant identity is created by generational memories and navigates a new world using the memories of the old one. These napkins act as vessels for family members, capturing the "language of linen" from my Colombian-Italian, Puerto Rican, and Cuban family gatherings and the traces left on them by the people they depict. This ghostly map explores how immigrant identities remain anchored by communal strength even when separated from their original geography. By assembling and arranging these shapes, the work occupies a liminal space where domestic objects transform into a portable history. 2023. A forensic examination of my family’s Italian and Colombian linens as they have been passed on to me. Unearthing the evidence of a life lived by applying pressure and embossing with a flocking technique, every unraveled lace border, every stain, every embroidery motif, all traces come to the forefront. The materials dictate the composition of each piece: the source material, the napkins, interacting with the print material, and the flock fibers. The flock material contrasts with the nature of old linens, erasing any nostalgia from the process and bringing the elements of the past to the present for recognition. Using trimmings from flock material lying around my studio, I wondered what would happen if I pressed these onto some of the linens my mother gave me. What came out was a beautiful examination of the visual language of linens and the motifs my family lived with. It made me wonder how these shaped how they perceived those moments and showed me the traces of a life lived: an unraveled lace edge, a stain. Like lifting forensic evidence. The process was very intuitive.The napkins in “The Parties” series are displayed in a 3 x 3 grid, showcasing nine napkins at a time, with each grid featuring a specific size of napkin. This arrangement allows viewers to appreciate the subtle variations in each piece while providing an overview of “the party.” It also emphasizes that each napkin has its own unique story. The resulting composition alludes to Modernism or Abstract art, where color and shape represent specific ideas. This time, it creates a tension between the past and the present and invites a careful examination of every detail that tells a story. I utilized the flock material on the napkin edges to highlight the details of the lace edge and to showcase the embroidery motifs, sometimes damaged and unraveled, of each set of napkins. Additionally, clear vinyl was used to emphasize the stains on each napkin as evidence of past events. July, 2023 "Lineage, Linen, Line" is designed to be the interactive component of the larger body of work called "The Parties." Its purpose is to invite the audience to play a crucial role in the act of recognition. The definition of recognition is "to know again": bringing elements from the past into the present for acknowledgment. The series consists of several custom-shaped pieces depicting the elements found in The Parties' vintage napkins. These elements, which I refer to as the "language of linen," have been subtracted, isolated, and reproduced as separate screen prints on raw linen. Each print is backed with buckram, a starched jute used to create corsets or hats, allowing the fabric to be manipulated like cardboard. "Neckline Portraits" come from the idea that any specific symbol placed on the neck and chest is there to protect the wearer inspired by the ancient Zapotec culture's custom to place specific marks on the chest areas of clothing because they believe these symbols protect the wearer's heart. For this series, I created "Neckline Self-Portraits" of the symbols that, to me, protect my heart. I then printed these on vintage silk square scarves using a "pigment discharge" technique. In the printing process, there's always an element of chance that is predominant because when the image of the portrait is printed on the silk scarf with a mix of pigment color and a décolorant substance, this mix reacts with the original colors of the scarf making the result always uncertain and usually surprising. Ideas of upcycling and sustainability, and "co-creation" are also explored. Utilizing another artist's work and adding my own on top creates a new piece that builds upon it. Hung on a wall or worn draped on the shoulders over the chest, they act as armor. You can arrange the pages to create your version of the memory. With three openings, the three components of the memory (background, foreground, and frame) can be arranged as desired, even mixed and matched to be displayed. "Memory is a Photocopy" is a project that explores the fascinating nature of memory and how the way our brain recalls experience is always determined by context. It consists of a ream of copy paper. Memories of the movie "The Seven Year Itch" are printed on vellum sheets and interspersed among the white copy pages. The user can combine these pages as desired, creating different versions of each memory. Because of the nature of this Special Edition material, you can see the effect of something that fades like memories, something that is not as sharp as it recedes to the back. You can also see how the framing changes the outlook of the content just like context does to memories when they are recalled.
